The concept of thermal insulation using neoprene:

By trapping a thin layer of water around the body, a neoprene wetsuit works in two ways: 1. The water trapped inside the wetsuit gradually warms up 2. Heat transfer from the body decreases. The wetsuit and the thin covering of water form a layer of insulation. Neoprene is a closed-cell elastomeric foam with trapped nitrogen bubbles that have insulating properties.

The technical GBS design of the DG500 dinghy/catamaran neoprene wetsuit is intended for cool and cold weather:

The Tribord DG500 neoprene wetsuit is made of 100% neoprene (thickness: 3mm) to ensure optimal thermal insulation. All seams are sewn together with strong thread suited to this particular type of fabric and are glued to prevent water getting through the seams (GBS). A neoprene strip is sewn under the zip to reduce the cooling effects of any water that gets through it. In the event of moderate to strong winds and cold weather, also wear the Tribord S500 sailing smock
